Cocktails offer a multitude of tastes and flavors. From the Margarita to the Cosmopolitan to the Manhattan, there is something for everyone. But to prepare them, it is not enough to simply mix the ingredients at random. There are different methods of mixing cocktails, each with its advantages and disadvantages or at least its specificity and a real interest in its choice depending on the cocktail to be made and the result that we want to obtain.

1. The shaker

Shaking is probably the most popular method of mixing cocktails. It involves putting the ingredients in a shaker with ice and shaking vigorously to mix everything well. This method is ideal for cocktails based on fruit juices, syrups or liqueurs. Cocktails that require a smoother texture and less ice are also well suited to being prepared using a shaker. When you "shake" your cocktail in a shaker you also allow in addition to the mixture, an emulsion of it which allows a release of the flavors.

2. The Blender

The blender is another method of mixing cocktails. It is particularly suitable for fruit-based cocktails, such as alcoholic or non-alcoholic smoothies. This method allows you to obtain a smooth and homogeneous texture for cocktails that contain fresh fruit. You can also make delicious granitas or "frozen" with the blender by adding a quantity of ice cubes that will give an icy effect to your cocktail. Beware of brain freeze!

3. The Mixing glass

The mixing glass is a more traditional mixing method, which is used for cocktails that do not require shaking. It is particularly suitable for cocktails based on whiskey or gin, such as the Martini. This method involves mixing the ingredients in the glass using a mixing spoon, which helps to preserve the delicate flavours and aromas. You will not get an emulsion and the dilution will be less than with a shaker.

4. Build cocktails

Direct mixing is a mixing method that simply involves pouring the ingredients one on top of the other in the serving glass. This method is particularly suitable for simple cocktails, such as the Gin and Tonic or the Cuba Libre. It allows you to quickly and easily prepare cocktails that have few ingredients and do not require much preparation.

In conclusion, there are several methods of mixing cocktails, each having a particular interest for the cocktail you want to make, depending on whether it requires an emulsion, a dilution, but also depending on the desired texture, for example a granite effect, or whether it contains pieces of fruit that need to be crushed. The final flavor can also vary depending on the mixing method chosen. Indeed, the typical example of the martini cocktail dear to James Bond will be different if you make it with a shaker or a spoon, the shaker in this case providing more dilution and an emulsion that will give a cocktail that is "lighter" in taste.

With these different methods, you will be able to prepare delicious and professional cocktails at home.
